An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
Millenium Centre Belfast
3rd and 4th September 2008

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based clinical method for helping people change. It combines the client-centered counselling style of Carl Rogers with directive psychological methods to help clients increase motivation for change, resolve ambivalence, strengthen commitment, and carry through with behaviour change. Originally developed for helping people with alcohol/drug problems, MI is now being applied more widely in health care, criminal justice, rehabilitation and mental health settings. Specific adaptations of MI have also been developed for use in medical settings where patient contact time is more limited.

Since my own training in MI I have been offering one-to-one counselling and groupwork support to adults with alcohol and drug related problems. In 2003 & 2004 I trained as a trainer in motivational interviewing with Professor William Miller and Dr. Steve Rollnick the architechs of MI. I am a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and have worked with Professor Mary Marden Valesquez a co-author of "Group Treatment for Substance Abuse. A Stages of Change Therapy Manual" offering group MI interventions with cocaine addicted adults in Houston Texas USA. In March 2006 I was trained in the use of the Motivational Interviewing Training Integrity (MITI) tool and in January 2007 I travelled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to complete the Motivational Interviewing Supervision Training (MIST) delivered by Professor Bill Miller and Dr. Terri Moyers.
